    Memento

    199 questions, infinite conversations

Memento is the primary conversation deck, filled with 199 cards that offer countless hours of deep, insightful conversation with friends and loved ones. In Latin, the word "memento" means "to remember." But it also can mean a treasured item, as in a memento from a trip you took.

    The deck contains:

    • 50 cards about death, dying, and end-of-life planning
    • 50 cards focusing on legacy, personal history, and heritage.
    • 50 cards that look inward, discuss values and beliefs.
    • And 49 additional cards that will ask questions you may never have thought to ask!

    Good to know!

The card topics are indicated by symbols at the top of the card, so users can quickly filter out questions that may not be appropriate for that given group!

    Memento Legatum

    "Remember your legacy"

The questions inside this deck were designed to get to know loved ones you feel you know well already. As in, your grandfather wasn't always your "grandfather"... he was first a son, a child, a teenager, possibly a sibling, etc. Get to know parts of people you never think to ask about, and in turn, the pieces will build the story of what makes them wonderfully them.

It's also a fantastic deck to use on your own. Think about the legacy you'll eventually be leaving. You're building those stories through your actions every day right now! Does your legacy look how you'd like it to? Or are there changes you can make now before it's too late?

    Some of the questions are:

    • What do you think is worse about life today compared to a few decades ago?
    • Do you think you're a good person? Why or why not?
    • What's something you never thought you'd experience but did?

Each deck contains 52 cards that can be used on their own, but they've been designed to complement the primary Memento deck.

    Memento Mori

    "Remember that you'll die"

Memento mori is a phrase most commonly found in Stoicism, used as a reminder that our time is limited and we should live accordingly. The Good Mourning Society is not a Stoic community, but the phrase is ideal for our mission! Remember that you will die, embrace it, plan for it, and you will likely live a better life.

The cards in this deck focus on questions around death, dying, and making end-of-life plans. These are important decisions to know about yourself and to know for those you may accompany along that last journey. They've been specially designed to help you create Advance Plans, documents that guide medical and spiritual care as you die.

    Some questions include:

    • Are there any specific quotes or passages you'd like read at your memorial or celebration of life service?
    • If you had a choice, where would you like to spend your last moments?

Each deck contains 52 cards that can be used on their own, but they've been designed to complement the primary Memento deck.

    Memento Vivere

    "Remember to live"

Have you ever tried to start a journaling habit and immediately gotten stuck? Or maybe you're feeling a little stuck in general! These cards will help you approach the situation from a completely different direction.

Using with a partner or group? Great! Getting to know how people think is just as important as what they think. You may be surprised by what they reveal.

    Some questions from the deck:

    • What little things make your day better?
    • How would you define the word "integrity"?
    • How do you deal with change?

Each deck contains 52 cards that can be used on their own, but they've been designed to complement the primary Memento deck.

    FAQs

These are just a few of the most common questions we've been asked, but if you have any others please get in touch.

Where did the names for the decks come from?

As mentioned above, memento mori is a core part of the Stoic philosophy. The flip side, and not something you see mentioned as much, is memento vivere. The idea is that while you contemplate death and its inevitability, you should also embrace life and try to live it fully and authentically.

From there, the Latin theme took hold!

Who are these decks appropriate for?

That's entirely up to your judgement. While they were designed to instigate conversations that can be difficult in nature, it's important to always do so in a responsible way. Consent, comfort, and compassion are foundational to any meaningful conversation.

    Where are the decks made?

The only way this project could've gone forward is if we found the right suppliers. All card decks are made in the UK by a fantastic, eco-focused manufacturer. Not only is their factory solar powered, they use responsibly sourced materials, minimize plastics, and more.

By manufacturing locally, the GMS supports the economy it works in, but also reduces CO2 emissions otherwise created when working with factories in China and Taiwan.

Do you offer discounts for death workers and medical professionals?

Absolutely! Get in touch and we'll be happy to help.

    Are their discounts for bundles?

Of course, the most cost-effective bundle is Memento with all three supplemental decks. But we're also happy to offer Memento with a supplemental deck of your choosing, as well as just all three decks together. Take a look at the shop for all available options.
