    3 essential conversations

A guided series for adults navigating aging parents, mortality, and life*

*all at the same fucking time

Millions of us, mostly Gen Xers and Millennials, are in the midst of a slow moving crisis that no one is talking about. As our parents start to reach the last stage of their lives, they do so in a world that looks very different from what they expected. Social services aren’t there to help like they thought, rocky economies have squeezed retirement funds, and costs are through the roof. And who will they turn to for help?

    Us.

    1-2

    The exclusive series

    You're not alone in this

This entirely predictable crisis will fall into your lap in some form or another. If you’re lucky, your folks are wealthy, emotionally mature, and have a healthy acceptance about their mortality. Or maybe your family is like mine, complicated and living in denial. Even if you’re completely estranged, there are still things you need to know to protect yourself.

Our generations have been through a lot. We’re at a point in our lives where *hopefully* we have a bit of stability, growing careers, maybe children and partners and houses. We now have enough life experience and enough energy to really feel close to realizing our dreams, whatever they may be.

I don’t want your parents’ inability to face their mortality to pull that all down. Because it can. So much faster than you’d ever think. It almost happened to me.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the what-ifs of it all. Unfortunately right now, all this information is learned only after you’ve been thrown into the deep end, sink or swim.

But I’m here to help change that.

    Welcome to the Society

As members of The Good Mourning Society, together we'll build the foundations for others to learn and grow.

    Who am I?

I'm Erin! I am a trained and experienced death care worker. I am a dual UK and US citizen, with knowledge of both systems. I have trained in helping others complete advance care plans, create legacy projects, have difficult conversations with their children, and how to help someone living with grief. I am compassionate, empathetic, and creative.

Most importantly, I’ve been there. I still am, actually.

I’ve had to navigate the practical and emotional storm that comes with aging parents who did next to nothing to prepare for their illnesses and deaths. Like the world’s shittiest scavenger hunt, I had to search and pay and beg and blindly hope my way through situations that had simple solutions - if only my parents had planned ahead.

    The sessions in detail

First and foremost, you’ll be part of a small group of people who are facing similar situations. Never underestimate the power of community, because there’s strength in even just knowing you aren’t alone in this. During these three months, I’ll help guide you through three phases of confronting this problem head on. For many, this is worth its weight in gold.

    1. Aging parents

You’ll receive practical advice you can use right away. I’ll help you prioritize the conversations you need to be having with your parents, give you tips on how to keep the lines of communication open, and some other things you may not have thought of.

If you have a complicated relationship with your parents, or they simply refuse to address these topics, I will also give you information on how you can prepare even without their help. Eliminating the ‘what-ifs’ and helping you feel more in control, no matter what happens in the future.

US date: July 13th at 3pm EST.
UK date: July 15th at 7pm BST.

    2. Mid-life

A natural progression from the first. What about you and your family? You obviously don’t want to put them in the same position your parents put you. So what can you do to prepare for the future?

And a little bit of a spoiler here - it’s genuinely empowering and life affirming to embrace your mortality. It helps you prioritize what matters most, so you don’t find yourself decades from now wishing you’d lived differently.

US date: August 10th at 3pm EST.
UK date: August 12th at 7pm BST.

    3. Community

Finally, we'll be taking everything we’ve learned and taught each other, and apply it to our communities. And by ‘community’ I mean those we have around us, however that looks to you. Friends, neighbors, colleagues… you will have the tools and knowledge to help when they need it most.

This series is for people who believe in doing our best to leave the world better than how we found it! That means your little corner of the planet can greatly benefit from what you've learned. Let's figure out how you can share it.

US date: September 14th at 3pm EST.
UK date: September 16th at 7pm BST.

    Good to know

Here's some more practical information so you know exactly what to expect.

    Disclaimer

The information shared in these sessions is not to be taken as professional medical, therapeutic, or legal advice. For example, we can discuss different elements of estate planning but I will always advise you to speak to a law expert. Or we may talk about CPR, but of course you should defer to your doctor's expertise.

    Dates and times

The sessions are 1.5 hours long. We will always have a portion of time set aside for peer-to-peer discussion. US dates: July 13th, August 10th, September 14th at 3pm EST. UK dates: July 15th, August 12th, September 16th at 7pm BST.

    Missing sessions

No recordings are allowed, so it’s important you don’t miss a session. This allows us to create a safer, more confidential space.

    1-1 support

As a supplement to the series, I offer weekly email sessions. It’s a great option for those who want a little extra support, have busy schedules, and/or enjoy taking their time to get their thoughts in order. Alternatively, I do offer 1-1 session outside of this series.
